Immigration About Fear Of Change

I've said this until I was blue in the face:

German immigrants who helped settle Iowa in the late 1800s did come legally. There was no way to come illegally until the 1920s. And yet it made little difference. They were still mistreated. That's because the issue was never legality. It was the same thing that fuels the discussion today: fear of change.

Ruben Navarrette Jr, may start feeling blue too.

Nothing to fear but fear itself. Change is a good thing as long as it is change in a positive direction. The over population of a nation, the lowering of scholastic standards, the collapes of our already weak social security system, a nation of unassimilated foreigners, a rise in violent crimes and the demise of the middle-class citizen will be the negative results of uncontrolled immigration and failure of our government to enforce the existing immigration laws. I see no positive results and perhaps that is what American citizens have a right to fear. The death of America as we now know it.

Good, then you'll vote for Obama I hope, who is the leading candidate for change. (It is uncanny that you blame illegal immigrants for all the above...just uncanny.)

You can not deny that illegal immigrants (aliens) contribute largely to every point I mentioned. Increaced population to the tune of 20-30 million over the past 20 years, where from? Students having to be taught in special language classes and at a slower pace, where from? Social security payment given to those that have not contributed for their entire working career, where from? Unassimilated foreigners, enough said, where from? A rising violent crime rate and a disproportional number of illegals in our prison system, where from? As people working jobs that pay at the poverty level thus drawing down average wages across the board, where from? I know this country needs change, but the time for inexperienced leadership that Obama brings is not the answer to the needed changes. Strong leadership must be someone that stands for the rule of law and not be influenced by chanting mobs of people demanding rights that they do not deserve. A true leader is needed to represent the will of the majority, not special interest groups.

Of course, we'll all vote for Obama. It is a known fact that the candidate who uses the word "change" the most in speeches is the most qualified to actually make [positive] change.

Most of what you wrote here EYES, is simply not true. The part of increased population is true, but the English/Spanish classes is half true: you also have to look at poor funding for schools, you also have to admit that not all schools are taught at slower rates and are taught in Spanish.

there are no 'disproportional number of illegals in prison. crime rates have dropped in many cities.

You are speaking in generalities, and not even mentioning many contributions immigrants make, and not in a few cases already, towns that have reversed anti-immigrant laws because getting rid of them was suicide, economically...even the bigger cities that refuse to get rid of them becasue of the dependence. Why not give amnesty to those who work hard and you don't have to worry about them 'breaking laws.'

Hope your analogy is not mixing legal immigrants with illegal aliens. Most legal immigrants are here to become American citizens by assimilating, whereas most illegal aliens are here for a paycheck and have no desire to become citizens or to assimilate. Blanket amnesty to millions of illegal aliens would be a slap in the face to those that came here legally and to those still waiting to come here legally. If the pro-illegal alien group could stop combining them with legal immigrants, it would be evident that illegal aliens are more of a drag on the U.S. economy than a boost. Billions of dollars leave the U.S. each year being sent to the home countries of illegal aliens that in turn resort to government sponsored programs for food, housing, medical care and any other freebees that they qualify for. So, let's not mix our legal and illegal immigrants when speaking about hard workers and law breakers.
