Latinos And Their Jewish Heritage

Like the old Prego commercial: “It’s in there.”

He tested the DNA of his relatives, along with some of the parishioners at Albuquerque’s St. Edwin’s Church, where he works. As word got out, others in the community began contacting him. So Sanchez expanded the effort to include Hispanics throughout the state.

Of the 78 people tested, 30 are positive for the marker of the Cohanim, whose genetic line remains strong because they rarely married non-Jews throughout a history spanning up to 4,000 years.

I don't know what is wrong with some Latinos - I embrace my mix, how 'bout you?   I'm not asking anyone to don a kippah, but just acknowledge that if it wasn't for those genes some of you wouldn't be here today.

I still don't get it. What happens when you find out your great grand daddy was a slave owning rapist, do you feel that now you can entertain those thoughts because it is in your genes?

When you learn that you have Jewish blood, do you feel chosen? Does your sense of entitlement increase?

Its your genes.

Do brown haired people think different than blondes?
Do brown eyed people make love better?
Can Latinos really dance better? Or is it just more practice?
Are black people naturals at sports and music?
Are Asians really smarter than all of us?
Are whites prone to violence more readily?
Oppps am I getting racist?

That's where gene talk get us.

I'm not anti science, but come on who cares what is in you? Are you trying to fit in where you were excluded by being able to claim 1/10 of them?

I think you are getting into the spectrum of the 'genes define who we are' argument; that's what this is not about. Just acknowledge your heritage; if you are Latino and have green eyes then you may have German blood (genes) in you. What's wrong w/ that and being okay with it?

Who cares about fitting in or being 'accepted'; just do your thing and be at peace with yourself.

Heritage? Heritage means an inheritance. Something passed on of value.

Are you saying these genes are valuable? And other are not? Are people looking to find the Gabrelino or Yaqui genes or just the western European genes?

Green eyes, red hair, straight hair, light skin color or olive skin, dark chocolate etc. are just mixes of genes, and most of those that are 'valued' in this society are recessive genes. The weaker genes.

I'm tired of hearing Latinos and most others who claim a _________(European ethnicity) grand mother or grand father. But they don't know who or when or from where. It is just a cop out of 'I'm not simple human. Value me more I got some European genes.'

You don't got white people worry about their brown eyes being from some Tahumara blood.

This is colonialism alive and well, in your genes.

I am proud and happy being who I am, without worrying or caring what genes are in me. I don't have some rare genetic defect, why worry about them. I am who I made myself to be.

Interesting...

As for this Jewish Latina though, I am not a Jew by birth but rather by choice. However, who knows...maybe I should look deeper into my history!
:-)

It sounds like you have an issue w/ not science, but the theories and thoughts that stem from genetics. You will find non of that here...just the facts sir.

And culture...heritage...these are man made things...temporary things; don't take too much pride in them as one is no better than another.
