Obama In
The Democratic clincher nominee is Obama would be the big headlines for the day. I know that a lot of Latino and Progressive bloggers have been pushing for Obama which is the only clear choice, unless you want politics as usual (I'm not going to back that up w/ anything, but that is how I generally feel).
For a nation, Obama would be great. But, if you think it will change much on local levels your mistaken. Community volunteering and participation in local politics is what is necessary to bring results down to the streets.

About this Entry

I ain't going to lie ... watching Barack & Michelle Obama last night in Minnesota as he claimed the nomination was an awe-inspiring moment for me as an African American. It still amazes me that this skinny Black guy made it all the way against the mighty Clinton machine.
Anyhow, I'm starting to think about his VP options. I'm curious... why doesn't Bill Richardson seem to excite Latinos in the way that Obama excites Black folks?
I ask because I consider Richardson to be a person with an ideal resume for the VP slot...
peace, Villager
Reasons:
Latinos are not a homogeneous group, so Richardson wouldn't appeal to all Latinos.
He's not that popular.
Not much of a campaign or press coverage (a lot of people didn't even know a Latino was running).
He's not eloquent; seems unprepared or doesn't have the experience; not that likeable.
He's too chubby? LOL.
I agree with you about community action.
I saw many white woman on CNN practically ripping their hair out because Hillary is not the Democratic candidate. The are admitting that they will vote for McCain even if they don't agree with his political views.
A scene from:
"Tuesday's with Hilly."
BLACK:
HILLARY CLINTON (V.O.)
The ghettos are where the cities bury all of their problems. If it gets too hot for a national figure, New York is always a good place to hide. Celebrities do it all the time. If you’re a politician, you find some crap hole that nobody else would stay in, and make that you’re home base. There are a lot of crap holes in the city.
FADE IN:
EXT. NEW JERSEY - NIGHT.
A sweeping helicopter view of the New Jersey turnpike. We follow the highway at break neck speed, across the George Washington bridge, down Broadway, an hard sloppy left bank, zooming over to the Harlem State Office building and up to the solely lit office of William Jefferson Clinton.
INT. WJC OFFICE, HARLEM - NIGHT
JIM CARVILLE, decked out in a light grey suit, light green shirt and matching satin tie, sits on one side of a small card table, opposite HILLARY CLINTON. Hillary sits nervously in a black leather jacket, black blouse, and slacks.
CLINTON
Those frigging punks - that DNC, those dirty pansies. You know Ace, this would have never happened to a guy.
Carville calmly takes a drag of his cigarette.
CARVILLE
What did you think Hilly, that you could go around talking about assassination, and dead Kennedys with one of them layin up there ready to kick the bucket himself?
Clinton angrily points a finger at Carville.
CLINTON
You know I didn’t know nothing about Teddy, Ace. You know that. What a piece a frigging rotten luck.
CARVILLE
What are you talking about Hilly? Everybody knew. Forget that. You’re in the book.
CLINTON
I’m in the book?
CARVILLE
Yeah.
CLINTON
Crap.
CARVILLE
Yeah, crap.
CLINTON
Well, you gotta fix it Ace.
CARVILLE
I can’t.
CLINTON
You said your self, there are only two people in the book.
CARVILLE
That’s right Hilly. You’re one, and your husband Bill is the other.
CLINTON
You mean I can’t be President?
CARVILLE
No, and neither can he.
CLINTON
Vice President?
CARVILLE
Not likely.
CLINTON
What the frig am I supposed to do now?
CARVILLE
I talked to his people--
CLINTON
The Blacks? The educated? The downsized? The Ex-Successful?
CARVILLE
No, Hilly, the DNC. And they said they need you to cool out for a while and maybe they’ll find something for you in healthcare. You like healthcare.
CLINTON
You listen to me. I can’t stand down tonight. I’m taking this crap to the convention. You’ll see.
Carville puts out his cigarette.
CLINTON (CONT’D)
All right, Ace.
Clinton gets up and leaves.
CARVILLE (V.O.)
It was too bad. Hilly couldn’t accept it. She was the heir apparent and the kid out of Chicago came to the Party, and worked the room better than she did. She lost the nomination and flipped.
MONTAGE OF SHOTS (SET TO THE STONES):
Clinton beating Bill Richardson’s car with a baseball bat.
Clinton setting fire to John Edward’s new house.
Clinton stealing all of the bed pans out of Ted Kennedy’s hospital room.
Clinton at a press conference, walking out on stage arm and arm with Joey “Dawgs” Lieberman, running as the "Independents".
CARVILLE (V.O.)
That night DNC called.
INT. - CARVILLE’S OFFICE
The phone RINGS. Carville picks up.
CARVILLE
This is Ace.
BILL RICHARDSON (O.S.)
(filtered through phone)
Ace. I’m sorry about Hilly. Nancy, Dean, Barry, nobody is happy about this. And Huffington is all over it-- daily. It's got stop. She's gotta stop.
Carville swallows hard.
CARVILLE
I talked to her, but you know how Hilly is, Richie.
BILL RICHARDSON (O.S.)
Yeah. I do. They’ll be a car -- not my car--but a car to pick her up tomorrow at ten. Barry wants a summit over at Feinstein's - just talk, okay Ace?
We hear the CLICK of the phone going dead. Carville hangs up the phone and takes a bottle out of the desk drawer. He throws back two, and sinks his head into his hands.
To be continued...
that would be insane!
Okay, my example is a little... out there. But I think that the idea is on point. The Dems are a very mixed bag of underclasses. Too often they-we fight over things that really dont matter, as much as our points of commonality.
The RepubliCon media machine aligns its constancy with continual talking points, on Fox, and AM radio.
By mimicking some, not all, but some of that tactic, perhaps the Dems. can brag one day about how well they courted the "Obama Republicans" the way the right brags about "Regan Democrats."
