Dolls or Hookers?

bratzThe NYTimes has an article covering the controversial dolls called "Bratz." These dolls are of the urban hip hop genre.

My initial reaction when I saw the Bratz dolls was in a word-atrocious! They are dressed in a sleazy sexy kind of way; they have exaggerated lips and over oval-full eyes. It is a horrific display of minority features.

For minorities that are fighting to be of the same equal status to whites is this the image that is going to be embraced by the youth? Are these the images that corporate America has of minority urbanites?

What is more surprising than that is the success of these dolls. Because they are such a big hit it is obvious that they are accepted by most youth and by most parents. They find nothing wrong with these images.

Miriam Arnold of Child magazine states:
"What I think it speaks to is that children are growing up very early [...] These days many children of 4 and 5 are developing a fashion sense [...] mirroring a society in which we're treating really young children as if they were much older."

Four and five year olds? Did you read that? Why is a society treating really young children as if they were much older? I would like to see statistics on the relation of how many young parents there are now compared to 20-30 years ago. Maybe then a survey of parents who object to these dolls and parents who do not. Then compare their answers along with their ages. There lies the answers.

It is the mindset of consumers. It is the mindset of parents that are the consumers. And it is ultimately the mindset of our youth. Is a fashion statement of jewelry and oversized clothes all that we can give our children to look up to?

Because of the huge success of the Bratz dolls, Mattel has come out with their version of multidiverse urban dolls called "Flavas." These dolls are geared to attend to the Hip Hop culture, and Mattel advertises them as such. Slogans on the website are in slang such as "Peace out," "Yo-what up, y'all," "they'll be chillin at Flava's." And they come with their own graffiti wall. That is the only downside to Mattel. At least there is no exaggeration of minority characteristics. How insulting.

What do these dolls do except for looking good sitting on a shelf? Are they doctors? Lawyers? Scientists? Bloggers? Imagine a Doctor saying "yo."

Aye...

Take my survey.

Ok, lots to say here.
1. dolls dont rule our lives. looking for a real influence on kids now days? hilary duff, lazy town, lindsy lohan, britny spears, dora the explorer, and the list goes on. have a problem with your kids clothes? do u blaim it on dora's shirt, which does show her stomach?
2. ya, bratz are slutts, if u dont like them, dont buy them.
3. dolls dont influence kids as much as ur saying. YOU kind of have more of an impact than a piece of plastic.
i'm not saying that bratz are a good thing [they are anything but] but i dont agree with the way the world blaims all the problems we're having here on a doll.

im 13 and do not think bratz are a good thing. I had a brat because i thought the fasion was cute. guess what. at school i got in trouble for wearing short skirts, mid-drift showing shirts, and tight short shorts. i dont think bratz are the WHOLE friggen reason i wore that tho. bratz are skanks, but come on.

I totally agree they are hookers!!!! My lil sisters are always playing with them. They are a bad influence they make little girls think they have to have the "PERFECT" body. Their clothers barley even fit. They are miniture-sized sluts. In my opioin and they are priced to high!

I think that the bratz dolls are cute but just because they are wearing those things like short shorts doesn't mean that you have to wear them too.I'm they can do that because their dolls. If you think their skanks because of what they wear then i'm thinking since you tryed to wear that, that's what you think of your self. They are OLDER BRATZ you wear stuff like that when your older. Not now as a teen or younger child.I think that the people who don't like bratz or any other things like barbies or somthing are HATERS cus you don't look like them or don't have the stuff that they have. Why are you going to HATE on dolls they aren't even real?

I think bratz are totally cute my sister and i play with them all the time. i think the bratz rock angelz movie is ok. i do admit the dolls are revealing and some kids see the flashy commercials with the bratz in them and want to dress like them. Some of the bratz clothes are appropriate like they have ski outfits for bratz too

Posted by: Trista at April 23, 2006 09:28 PM

ok the whole bratz thing has been goin on since they came out.ya i think they r a lil inappropriate but so r a lot of things in life, like barbie.they r about the same as bratz so y dont u guyz dis on them?and the bratz r older then 5 and there clothes r really stylish.ya the clothes dont fit and their heads r gigantic but guess what, they also hav no feet!!!this prooves to most kids that the whole bratz thing is unreal and fake.so if u really dont like the bratz, dont complain to other ppl, tell the company that makes the dolls!!
