Free Trade in Latin America
Stepping forward from the recent plans for Bolivia's oil pipeline which resulted in the ousting of the former Bolivian president Gonzalez Sanchez de Lozada, the US plans to open talks with Latin American countries:
With the outlook for an Americas-wide free trade agreement up in the air, the Bush administration could announce plans next week to begin bilateral free-trade talks with several Latin American countries, U.S. industry officials said.
[...]there have been hints the United States could "make some sort of announcement" regarding free-trade talks with the Andean countries of Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia.
One issue the administration appears to be considering is whether to announce plans to for a regional free-trade agreement with the Andean nations or individual deals with each of the four nations, Farnsworth said.
The second option would give the United States more flexibility given the different levels of readiness among the four Andean nations and recent political turmoil, he said.
